The News As I See It (a 1990's recollection)

A little about me:

I'm a pluralist when it comes to the nature of our government; I'm a deist when it comes to matters of faith; I'm a loyalist when it comes to matters of family; I view the world with an existential bias, I question every mindset, I think that when there's something to be shared with someone, I'm at my best. I like the color purple.

Home is New Orleans. I've travelled the world and two of the seven seas, though there's arguably five. I've yet to go to Africa, Asia or Australia, but they are all on a mental to-do list. I'd like to smuggle medicine to refugee camps in Africa. I'd like to hike a portion of the Great Wall of China. I'd like to go to the outback of Australia. In the interim I want to go to the Grand Canyon. I've only recently gotten as far as Santa Fe.

I like to view the world with gentle eyes, but the world won't always allow it. I dislike the way the national media portrays the stories they report. I believe in balance. I rarely see balance in existance...balance in action.

I think the wisdom of Tyler Durden can be lived by. I think religion is distorted by the followers. All religion. I think burnt sienna is not that pretty of a color. Raw umber, also. Usury is the work of the devil. I like to eat...and not just for survival. I like to eat for the experience of the meal. That exludes crap food that makes my ass big. If my ass gets big, it'll be because someone in the kitchen of a damned good restaurant was using all four sticks of butter or lard that would make you wanna slap ya mamma. (That's N'awlins talk for damned good cookin'.)

I paint. I write. I draw. I dream. I take snaps. I want to learn how to play the guitar. I just recently bought my guitar. I've waited too long and for that. I'm not too good yet, but I'll get there. I'll never be a rock star, but I don't need to be. Eventually I'll get my guitar (pronounced gee-tar) back to N'awlins now that I'm a movin' and a shakin' back.

Today is the first day of the rest of my life. I've caught sunshine rainbows radiating godliness from behind torpid clouds. They've made me smile. Sometimes they were so beautiful, they've made me cry.

Musical tastes include the Grateful Dead, 311, Blue October, Neutral Milk Hotel, O.A.R. and then some. One of my favorite music buys was a complete symphonic recording of Les Miserables. It's complimented by the exact same discs in French. I don't speak French, though I spent seven years learning it. I speak Spanish, but not Spain's version. When I read signs in banks written in proper Spanish, I think they've mispelled the words because I know the Spanish of the central-American poor.

I've lived in Nicaragua. Everytime I say or write Nicaragua, I hear the song of Nicaragua Nicaraguita in my head. I am not a communist. I've traveled to Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama, Columbia, Venezuela, Trinidad and the Dominican Republic. I've traveled to England and Ireland, but I only spoke English there. I've been to the Bahamas and I'd like to think that it counts as being outside of the country. The world is a finite place filled with finite resources. I've travelled two of the seas, twenty-six states, and fifteen countries. Nicaragua is one of the few places I'll call home.

As I said, home is New Orleans. I was on the verge of leaving. I even left, but I wasn't gone long enough for it to qualify as leaving. I was eating at Honey LeMoyne's LeMoyne Landing in Santa Fe when I realized, for true, that I had to get my derriere back to decent kitchens. It may make me somewhat unpopular with some in my home city, but if it weren't for the Mexicans, I would have died in the west Texas desert of starvation from the refusal to eat bland food.

I'd move to Mars, but the environment there is less friendly than the people here. Care packages with the right seasonings would probably take too long. I love being the messenger of good news. I love sharing the concept of brotherhood with someone who wants to understand and needs to know. I'll do anything for my friends. I like Thai food, among others. I think tangental thoughts are okay if you're making a point. Have I mentioned my favorite color was purple?
